The UAE has demonstrated strong growth in electricity demand in
recent years. In 2004 annual growth peaked at 14.1 per cent and
will continue to be strong in 2005 with an increased forecast of 12.1 per cent.
To meet soaring electricity and water demand, a number of independent
integrated power and water projects have been awarded. With the need to
almost double current installed capacity from about 11 000 MW to 20 000
MW by 2020, the plan is to continue to attract private investment into the
sector. Strong demand growth in the UAE coupled with the long-term goal of
privatizing the electricity sector, will ensure the UAE remains a key market in
the region for years to come.
